School Sports

Pelton Community Primary School has a rich history of sporting success. Our ethos provides opportunities for competition, fun, self belief, self improvement and leadership through the PE curriculum and other sporting opportunities across the school year. As well delivering high quality PE lessons and offering a number of other sporting opportunities, we provide a number of extracurricular activities including after school clubs in Football, Netball, Multiskills, Dance, Games, and SEN friendly sports such as Boccia and New Age Kurling.

Our House Captains, School Sports Organising Crew and Physical Education Leader Mrs Tyrens regularly update our School Sports Twitter page (@PeltonComSport) and Facebook page with exciting sports news including dates, competitions, events, results and celebrations.

We are proud to have held a Gold award in the School Games Awards in association with The Youth Sport Trust since 2014 and are thrilled to have recently received a Platinum Level Accreditation from the School Games Organisers!

The School Games values are embedded in everything we do at our school and help us to provide a warm and supportive ethos full of encouragement, challenge and self belief.  They are as follows:

SELF–BELIEF – Always believe you can achieve.   Having the confidence and self-belief to succeed.

House System

We operate a House System at our school. All children and teachers are a member of one of our houses – Aidan, Bede, Cuthbert and Godric. The houses are named after Northern Saints and have been part of our school for at least the last 20 years! Tapestries created by children from our school hang proudly at the front of our hall depicting images of the Saints and some of the things they represent in order to encourage children to aspire to them.

Every September children from Year 5 and 6 are able to nominate themselves to become House Captains. They make a presentation to the members of their house and a vote take places to appoint a Captain and Vice Captain. The successful candidates are given training in playground leadership to support them in playing an influential role for team members across the school. As well as supporting the delivery of a number of intra competitions by leading events, taking scores and coaching younger team members, they are expected to be positive role models across every area of school life.

We represent our houses on sports day and earn points by taking part in a series of Intra Sport Competitions throughout the year, but the houses are not only used for sport. They are part of school life and build a sense of community across years groups and give children a feeling of belonging. House points are awarded through our Class Dojo system for a number of things, including displaying our school games values of team work, honesty, determination, passion and most importantly, self–belief. Children work together and support each other to build up their points in order to see which team will be awarded the House Cup at the end of each half term! The winning team earns a special treat and can enjoy it together.

Active 30

The Government Childhood Obesity Plan has set out the ambition for all children to achieve 60 minutes of physical activity every day, with schools being responsible for delivering 30 of these active minutes and parents also being responsible for 30 active minutes.

At our school, we want children to have the best start in life and physical activity plays a key part in physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, as well as academic learning! We endeavour to ensure children are physically active for at least 30 minutes a day at break times, by providing various play opportunities as part of our OPAL provision and we work with Simply Sport to organise games and sporting activities every lunchtime with a vision to provide inspiration on how to embed physical activity into young people’s lives. We also ensure children receive 2 hours Physical Education Curriculum teaching per week.

Sporting Competition

Throughout the academic year we organise a number of ‘My Personal Best’ competitions. This is an approach that enables all young people to flourish in PE, school and life – now and in the future. We believe a fun ‘compete against yourself’ approach to physical activity with a focus on resilience and perseverance which supports our children to become confident and adventurous learners across the curriculum.

Intra School sporting competitions are embedded in our curriculum and are centered around team based competitions. Children are required to use skills based around sports in order to earn points and compete for the House Cup. This year alone children have enjoyed Cross Country, Beanbag Throw, Dodgeball, Indoor Athletics and Rugby skill events.

We provide our children who wish to compete at a higher level an opportunity to compete against others within Chester Le Street and County Durham. We are a member of The Chester Le Street Primary School Sports Junior Football league and annually take part in tournaments against other schools in the local area. We access the boys and girls Year 5/6 leagues and also play in the Year 4 competition. We take part in the Watson Cup and the RO Willis Y4/5 Cup and have had many successes over the years.  Take a closer look at our league results here – https://www.clsschools.co.uk/

We also have a number of other leagues in which we can participate, such as the Chester le Street Schools Netball league and SEN inclusive sporting opportunities in Boccia and New Age Kurling.

As part of our work with the School Sports Partnership, we identify children to attend workshops aimed at children who are Gifted and Talented in PE. They meet at a central location with children from other schools and have an opportunity to apply their skills to a number of sports at a higher level and take a deeper look into the importance of being active and how to stay healthy.

Unique Opportunities

Throughout each academic year we aim to provide children with a wide variety of experiences in a range of sports. We work closely with the Durham and Chester Le Street School Sports Partnership and other organisations throughout the year and across all year groups. Examples of activities from previous years are Archery, Team Building, Outdoor Adventurous Activities, Quidditch, Scatterball, Dance Festivals, Skipping Week, Yoga and Winter and Summer Fun Runs. Every June we acknowledge National School Sports Week and take part in a series of events as well as holding our Sports Days.
